Flight Simulator: The Difference 25 Years Makes

October 2, 2008

Ever since I first booted up subLOGIC's Flight Simulator II on my Apple //c back in 1984, I've been a flight simulation fan. No mission or point other than to just fly.

Of course, it was a somewhat crude affair back then. Flight Simulator II came on a 140K floppy disk and ran in 64K on the Apple II's 8-bit 1.02MHz 65C02 processor. With 6 on-screen colors in high-res mode. It wasn't what you'd call "photorealistic," but it was fun.

I recently reviewed X-Plane 9 for the iPhone, and this made me realize it had been a while since I spent any real time with a desktop flight simulator. So I went out and picked up Microsoft's Flight Simulator X for my relatively meager (by current standards) XP box: a Shuttle XPC with a 3.2GHz P4, GeForce 6600 GT, and 1GB of RAM. It comes on two double-layer DVDs and is a 14GB install--the complete app is about 105,000 times larger than the Apple II version.

Flight Simulator X runs very smoothly on the box.

Flight Simulator X is an amazing application. I've had great fun flying about since picking it up and it occurred to me that the difference in realism and complexity between Flight Simulator X and Flight Simulator II really illustrates just how far computing technology has come in the last 25 years.

I thought a little comparison video would convey what I'm speaking of to those who've never spent any time with Bruce Artwick's 1983 classic.

Yeah, I always loved Flight Simulator - it was one of my favorite games. I had it on my IBM PC, not on an Apple II, but it looked the same.

What fun days those were.

Great comparison, Blake. What an absolutely mind-blowing improvement in real-time consumer computer graphics technology.

You've also made me want to buy Flight Simulator X. :)

Hi Blake,

I love your blog, but a slight constructive criticism: I wish you updated it more often!

Cheers

@Nahuel: I work a day job, run TouchArcade.com with Arnold Kim and run iPodHacks.com. I also have a 2yo daughter. This is my only "for fun" site -- no profit. I do wish I could update it more, tho.

I understand of course, keep up the good work

Is that Lake Powell you're flying over in the modern simulator program?

I think you need a bit more of a story with this as this isn't really a news story in its current form. Perhaps you could write about why you like Michael so much?

I began using cigarettes while I was 14 years old. That was the most terrible wrong move I've made. Now 20 years later and I have emphysema. While trying to kick the habit, I saw the e-cig and will try it out. Hopefully, it will help me with this bad habit.

I stopped smoking over the weekend and it is really starting to hit me today. My best friend keeps telling me I will not keep going however I'm so serious about it I won't fail. This morning I started getting painful sensations in my abdomen and I genuinely want a puff. I can't give in because I am quitting for our kids. I'm lucky to have the e-cig. It is incredibly helpful if you ask me.

I wasted money on cigarettes for as long as i can remember and giving up smoking has been extremely difficult. I bought each of the quit smoking aids but not anything helped me stop. Then I stumbled on the electric cigarettes. The electric cigarette uses a nicotine mixture that is created from nothing but nicotine. Absolutely no smelly smoke at all. They've already luckily saved my life.

I stopped smoking 3 days ago and it is really beginning to affect me today. My boyfriend tells me I will not get it done but I'm so focused of this I can't fail. This morning I began experianceing aches and pains in my stomach and I kinda want a cigarette. I won't give up because I'm stopping for my kid. I am lucky to have the electric cigarettes. It has been beneficial to me.

I smoked cigarettes for quite a while. I understand it affects my overall health so I wish to quit smoking though it is almost impossible. None of the quitting tips did any good. Then I came across the smokeless cigarettes. It's literally changed my life. No more breathing poisons feels superb!

While seeking to give up smoking cigarettes, I discovered the e cig. The e cig uses a nicotine mixture which is made up of nothing but nicotine. Simply no toxic substances all that. They've in a literal sense changed my life. No more breathing in smelly smoke feels really good to me!

Almost all that is on my mind is using cigarettes. I know i don't like to smoke and if anyone offered me a draw today, I'd have to decline. I feel I'm in a very crappy emotional state and have been having trouble sleeping nevertheless I understand I will have to turn out to be healthy. The electronic cigarettes may also be helpful in the long run.
